The tradition of inside glass painting dates back to the 17th century. Snuff tobacco was introduced to China in the Ming Dynasty, when a missionary offered tobacco to the ruling emperor as a gift. The tobacco was stored in glass bottles. During the Qing dynasty the bottles were being painted with beautiful miniature designs. These inside painted snuff bottles were very fashionable at the imperial court. Different themes were painted on the inside of the glass , combining art, calligraphy and poetry. Today only a select group of painters master this traditional way of painting. The contours are applied inside the glass. Then, using a curved brush, the details and the background colors are painted inside. Every object is hand painted and is a unique piece of art.
